Brum deal for Euell Jul 29 2005

South London Press

CHARLTON midfielder Jason Euell is poised for a move to Birmingham in a deal worth £2million.

Addicks plc chairman Richard Murray and Blues owner David Sullivan are

close to thrashing out a deal for the unsettled midfielder.

Euell, who was signed for a club-record £4.75million from Wimbledon in 2001, is desperate for a fresh start after falling out of favour last season despite signing a new two-year deal last summer.

The previous three seasons saw the Jamaican international finish as Charlton's top scorer in the Premiership. His league record is 33 goals from 97 starts.

Do you know what I am not going to have a go about this possible signing. He did well for Wimbledon, as it says Charlton payed 4.2m for him. Can`t he play also as an attacking midfielder???
If he comes all the best to him but I am not enjoying this slating people before they even come to the club. Many players do not seem to perform for 1 club then excel in another. He may just give us a different dimension and will be a useful squad player.
It just shows how some of our supporters have been this closed season though they complain the board show lack of ambition, deride most players we go after then give unrealistic alternatives. Just give the bloke a chance nothings been side yet and he hasn`t kicked a ball in anger for us.

Name an alternative thats unrealistic then. We have a very wealthy board and the club still has money left to spend. I am not asking for the world. Just a top quality player or two like the board promised.

Good post. I just look at Bolton and big Sam. I look at some of the mediocre, ageing players he has signed over the seasons. Then I look at where Bolton finishes each season. Big Sam gets the best out of them.

I then look at what we have signed. Pennent, going no where until he came to us. Heskey, stuck on the subs bench at Liverpool. Came to us and had a great 1st season.

If Euell comes, I for one will wish him all the luck.

Yes he has been used as an attacking midfielder for the last 2 seasons at Charlton. Not sure if he wants to play there though. He may be seeking a move away as he wants to play in his favoured role of striker.

If he can do a job there we should go for him! We need somebody who can support the front two.

I have mates who are Charlton fans and the consensus is that he is excellent in midfield (double figures in goals for 3 years running before last season) but crap up front.

Thats unrealistic for most clubs mate. Name some more.

In fact, ill name some that are realistic.

Davids, VDM, Davis, Boa Morte, Malbranque, Emre, Parker, Appiah. I could go on. Why are we not in for players of this type of quality??

I welcome Jason Euall. I think he will be a good addition to the team.

I am afraid that some of the above are living in fantasy island. Most if all of the players named would not come to Birmingham even if we could afford them. They want European Football and to live in London. End of story.

We have a good team that is getting better. There are no instant fixes.

Roll on the season and watch the faces of the whingers when we win a few games. KRO!

All I said if you check through the history of the message board there are many instance of fans suggesting unrealistic names of players we could sign while criticising the ones we are linked with. If you take this personally you must have a guilty conscience or just plain stupid as it was not an attack on you. Check yourself and you will see what I mean.

by the way 3 of your players have gone to other clubs, Parker turned us down. How do you know we have not enquired about the other 3.... don`t tell me you haven`t read it in a newspaper or on the internet. No-one really knows what we are up to at the minute so stop being so defeatest.

Hes an extra body, offers something different and has pace. Something we are lacking.

Not the international midfield star i was looking for, but he can be very useful for us if he signs. Think hes beter in midfield than upfront.

Where in midfield would he play though??

I just cant see him as a central midfielder as hes not s defensive type and hes not much of a creative attacking midfielder either. His goalscoring record is poor.

If he cant get first team football at charlton what use is he to us.

We should be aiming so much higher than this. :(

His scoring record is more than 1 in 3 starts in the Prem.
That's poor?

Found a player history summary for those who are interested

Profile

A Wimbledon youth product, Euell's versatility and eye for goal made him a key part of the Dons' first team set-up after he burst onto the scene in 1995/96 with a goal against Southampton.
The former England Under-21 international thrives on taking on defenders and he has shown his knack for coolness in the penalty area with a steady goalscoring ratio.

Good in the air and on the ground, Euell - like his contemporary Carl Cort, who moved to Newcastle United - attracted the attention of a host of scouts but Terry Burton was keen to keep him at Selhurst.

But when Charlton came in with a bid of £4.75million in the summer of 2001 it was too good to turn down - and Euell jumped at the chance of returning to the top flight after a season in the First Division. It was a new club record signing for Charlton.

Euell scored 41 goals in 118 League starts for Wimbledon.

The striker made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at home to Everton, but had to wait until October for his first goal in a 1-1 draw at Derby County.

Euell went on to notch 13 goals in his first season at The Valley, making him top scorer.

At Charlton he became accustomed to playing in midfield, as well as up to, making him a versatile squad member.

Euell once more topped the scoring charts in 2002/03 with 11 goals, mostly from the centre of the park. He was also runner-up in the Addicks' player of the year poll.

He started the 2003/04 with a bang, netting three goals in the opening four games, but then a row with manager Alan Curbishley resulted in him being relegated to the bench.

They did patch up their differences, and Euell scored 10 Premiership goals that season - meaning he was again the leading goalscorer. He also passed 100 appearances for Charlton

Does anyone see him being employed just behind the main striker away from home in tough games? Brucey tried it a few times last season with Dunn/Izzet and one or two others. Euell might be the perfect player to play that role to nick us a goal away from Stan's.

When you look at his record he looks a good signing for £2M, if he comes lets get behind the bloke, he is a class above Mozza.
